Widespread Flu Activity Claiming the Lives of Hoosiers and Kentuckians

Posted On December 31, 2014

By Alison Wiegand

(Lawrenceburg, IN)-  Influenza activity has been steadily increasing. So far, the flu has claimed the lives of five Hoosiers and six Kentuckians.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported the influenza activity level in Kentucky has increased from “regional” to “widespread”.  Widespread flu activity is the highest level and means flu outbreaks have occurred in over half of the regions in the state. In Northern Kentucky alone, over 617 cases of the flu have been reported. In Indiana, according to the Indiana State Department of Health,  five schools (K-12) have achieved an absenteeism rate of 20% or higher due to the flu.

Since flu season can last from October until May, health officials are strongly encouraging individuals to receive the  flu vaccination. It is not too late. After receiving a vaccine, it approximately takes two weeks for immunity to develop and offer protection against the flu. This year, there is a plentiful supply of flu vaccines. The majority of health plans cover the cost. Flu vaccinations can be received at multiple locations, such as, local health departments, provider offices, local clinics and pharmacies.

The following individuals are highly encouraged to receive the flu vaccine:

• Children ages 6 months – 19 years
• Pregnant women
• Individuals 50+
• People of any age with chronic health problems
• Individuals who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
• Health care workers
•Caregivers or people who live with a person at high risk for complications from the flu
• People who live with children less than 6 months old

Flu activity will continue to be tracked and reported on a weekly basis as part of the CDC’s national flu surveillance system.
